Gustavus William Wicksteed's long life from 1799 to 1898 was spent filling various legal positions: assistant law clerk to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1828; in 1838 law clerk to the Special Council of the Province; law clerk of the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces in 1841; law clerk to the Canadian House of Commons in 1867. He published several indexes to the statues of Canada as well as this more interesting book of poetry or "waifs."
