Shirley Temple is a wife and mother. Things are not always what they seem, least of all in this collection of 34 stories by 22 New Zealanders. The wry, poignant title story is abou t a crisis in New Zealand, not Hollywood. Most of the stories are by women, about women. Many are about the hungers of women. And if beneath the surface there is a desperate reaching out, this is how so many writers see life in the 1970s. Humour, robust stories of men at work, fantasy and moments of grace leaven the collection. Here are stories by and about Maoris, and Islanders; about children and schools and life styles from state house or bungalow to a shack in the country. Other ways of living are recalled, and some of the stories move beyond New Zealand.
