Charles Goodall & Sons was founded in 1820 in Soho, London but later moved to Camden. Goodall, with its biggest competitor, De La Rue, accounted for approximately two-thirds of dom estic playing card production by 1850. The firm's Camden works employed over 1000 people, playing a key role in the economic development of East London.
