Its name comes from the way the rider sits “boxed in” between a prominent pommel and cantle. The wooden tree is traditionally wrapped with rawhide, then covered with carefully fitted leather skirts embossed with artisan motifs. A distinctive feature is the guarnición (breeching harness system) — long leather straps (retrancas) that encircle the rear of the horse, secured with caídas attached to the tail cover (florón) A crupper is always used with Peruvian saddles, linked to the tailpiece via a short leather strap called a cruzeta.
