This is a collection of his own notes and excerpts he recorded over the years, many being very short paragraphs. It feels a bit like an attic of his brain, which he calls in the preface a "desultory miscellany." He wrote prefaces to Austen novels and there is a very short comment on Austen in this book, in which he discusses opinions of others - Gladstone, Dickens, Scott, Coleridge, Macaulay, Cowell, Lord Beaconsfield ("indeed delcared he had read Pride and Prejudice no fewer than seventeen times!").
