In an interview on New Zealand television in July 1995 David McTaggart, the founder of Greenpeace International, suggested that New Zealanders should sail yachts to protest at the site of the proposed French nuclear tests at Moruroa and Fangataufa atolls. It was a call which resonated strongly with many anti-nuclear activists in this country and within weeks fourteen yachts were on their way. This book is a selection of interviews recorded by Claudia Pond Eyley with the participants after they returned. There is a valuable introduction by Tony Atkinson which contextualises the 1995 protests. It covers the 1973 peace flotilla at Moruroa, the sea-borne protests against nuclear ships and submarines in New Zealand harbours, and the events leading up to the 1995 flotilla. Each excerpt is accompanied by a photograph of the person interviewed and a brief biography. Pond Eyley has also included women who participated in the Women's Peace Flight to Tahiti, and support people such as Rib Compier, who provided communications for the boats via Radio Nikau in the Cook Islands.
