C. These were undoubtedly the fullest years of the life of this famous classical poet. He first arrived in Rome from Verona in 63 B. C. as a very inexperienced young man, with a letter of introduction to Julius Caesar. This introduction opened the doors of Roman society to the poet. The author provides us with vivid portraits not only of the famous figures of the age, like Julius Caesar, Pompey and Cicero, but also of Clodia (the “Lesbia" of the poems). The losing struggle of youthful idealism in the face of the splendour and corruption of Roman Society is perheps the most arresting theme of this remarkable novel.
