At an actual 15 1/2" x 23 1/2" x 1 3/4", the 16x24x2 Aerostar fits a nominal 16x24x2 return - common in older residential systems and some light commercial applications. The 2-inch depth roughly doubles the debris-holding capacity compared to a 1-inch equivalent, and the lower pressure drop across the deeper pleat is easier on the blower motor. MERV 8 covers baseline household filtration: dust, lint, and pollen. MERV 11 steps up for pet dander, smoke residue, and most allergens. MERV 13 captures fine particulates including bacteria, smoke, and virus-carrying aerosols. The deeper depth makes higher MERV grades more workable - MERV 13 in a 1-inch filter can choke an older system, but the 2-inch version's lower face pressure makes the same MERV rating practical for more installations.
