This Kurume Kasuri fabric is woven on a retro belt-driven power loom from the Showa era, where twenty looms are connected to a single motor.Founded in 1948, the mill is one of the long-established Kurume Kasuri weavers.Kurume Kasuri is one of Japan's representative traditional yarn-dyed textiles.It is known for its soft texture that resembles handwoven fabric.Because many of the processes are done by hand, it takes more than 30 steps and 2 to 4 months to complete the weaving.After weaving, the fabric is washed in hot water and air-dried, shrinking it by about 10%.This textile is ideal for those who wish to create a special piece using traditional Japanese fabrics.This fabric features a large stripe pattern that repeats once across the full width of the cloth. It is an original pattern by Shimogawa Orimono.The term shima (stripe) originates from the Edo period, when vertically striped cotton fabrics brought from overseas through Nanban trade were called shimamono, meaning"goods brought from the islands."
