Edited with Introduction and Notes by Elisabeth Jay. This is the most famous of the popular novels by Ellen Wood aka Mrs. Henry Wood [1814-1887]. This edition was the first to retu rn to the racy, slang-ridden language of the first edition, rather than the language of the watered-down subsequent "improved" versions. First published in 1861, this is one of the first novels known as "Sensation Fiction," along with The Woman in White and Great Expectations.
