It first appeared as a serial and was published as a book in three volumes in 1863. The novel is based on real events and incorporates many historical figures. Noble and courageous Romola maneuvers through the political changes Florence goes through during this rapidly changing time period, and deals with disappointments with men as she tries to do good.
