A detailed map of Port Phillip initially from 1836, with updates to 1862. It shows the whole coastline of Port Phillip, including some detail of the area around Melbourne, such as the original horse racing track, which was located to the west of Batman's Hill (Spencer Street area). Of course there are many features added to the original survey map, such as the railway, which wasn't there before 1854. The initial survey was carried out by Lieutenants Symonds and Henry, from HMS Rattlesnake. All text © HotPress Notes from the State Library of Victoria tell us that this map was "Surveyed by Lieuts.
