Date: Wednesday 4 December 2024 Time: 12 to 1pmThe recently published RIBA Conservation Guide is the first book of its type to be based on ICOMOS's (International Council on Buildings and Sites) Education and Training Guidelines. As these guidelines underpin accreditation in a number of built environment professions, including RIBA, understanding them is an essential part of the accreditation process. This Webinar will deal with key aspects of the RIBA Guide, including conservation philosophy and ethics, cultural significance and responding to climate change. David McDonald will provide an introduction to the guide and its value to students on RIBA's Conservation Register Course. He will deal with the philosophy and ethics of building conservation and how it affects practice in the UK and abroad. In doing this he will be stressing the importance of recognising conservation as a specialised aspect of architectural practice. Marion Barter will continue with examples of recognising cultural significance and identity in building and places. She will also provide advice on the skills necessary to 'read' an historic building and on the methods and sources of research. Anna Joynt will conclude the presentation by examining practical conservation issues in relation to historic buildings. In particular, she will look at the effects of climate change and what that means in terms of improving the energy efficiency of historic buildings. The key learning points will include: ICOMOS and UNESCO Principles Making Balanced Judgements Case studies, including a variety of practical experience in the public, private and academic sectors Essential aspects of climate change and retrofit Obtaining expert advice and constructive collaboration SpeakersDavid McDonald BSc, Dip TP, Dip Cons (AA), IHBC David is an independent urban design and conservation consultant with over 30 years experience in the historic environment sector. He currently specialises in providing training for built environment professionals including town planners, conservation officers and architects, but also provides advice to a number of private and public sector clients. He has been a tutor on the RIBA’s Conservation Register course since 2017. David completed the Diploma in Building Conservation at the Architectural Association before leading the Conservation and Urban Design Team at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) for over 20 years. He has been Director of Historic Environment Training Ltd since 2011. David is a Trustee of the Council on Training in Architectural Conservation, and he became President of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) in 2015, and subsequently Chair since June 2019. Marion Barter Marion taught on the RIBA Conservation course from 2014, initially as a guest speaker, then as a regular tutor from 2016 presenting modules on historic buildings research, reading buildings, cultural significance, setting and writing reports and conservation plans. The first half of her career was in the public sector, initially in archaeology until she discovered she cared more about standing buildings. She worked on the 1980s Listing Resurvey in Wiltshire, as a conservation officer in rural Yorkshire and Sheffield and for Historic England in the North West before going into consultancy. After 12 years with the Architectural History Practice (AHP) she set up her own heritage consultancy advising clients in the North of England. Her particular interests are in vernacular architecture, industrial heritage, rural estates, churches and chapels and community heritage. Born in the middle of the Lake District, she now lives in Derbyshire. Anna Joynt From conservation management plans to detailed renovations, Anna is a conservation architect with a wide ranging and historically diverse portfolio. Her expertise finds its way into many of our projects. An RIBA Advanced Conservation Course guest lecturer, Anna lectures widely and is a member of the judging panel for the Church Architecture Awards, Vice President of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association, and Trustee of the Zibby Garnett Travel Fellowship.
