This series of four webinars will explore a wide range of conservation issues spanning from the theoretical to the technical. This suite of CPD modules has been curated to provide learning opportunities for all architects, whether they are newcomers or experienced, in the field of heritage. The four webinars can be purchased separately or as a package and will be taking place on the following dates:Sourcing historic support information: ICOMOS Education and Training Guide (d)Tuesday 12th March 2024, 1 to 2pm Ingval Maxwell will be opening up the series with a webinar questioning how we: “find and absorb all available sources of information relevant to the monument, ensemble or site being studied.” – a particularly poignant and often overlooked guide in the ICOMOS education and training guidelines which form the backbone of the conservation register.Analysing the Palladian Villa and its use as a climate hubTuesday 11th June 2024, 1 to 2pm Michela Pace & Alan Chandler will then be following up with a really exciting presentation of The Palladian Villa and its use as a climate hub, supporting multiple municipalities to create social and environmental resilience.Investigating historic buildings and their wider social valueTuesday 20th August 2024, 1 to 2pm Charles Bain-Smith will be following on the theme of social value as he presents his module on Investigating historic buildings and their wider social value. Charles will be specifically addressing functionality & building specificity as a tool to explore how they acquire develop, or indeed alter their social value.Timber Framed Buildings and their Conservation ApproachTuesday 12th November 2024, 1 to 2pm Paul Chatham will deliver a module on Timber Framed Buildings and their Conservation Approach – a topic which is as important now as it has ever been, especially in the wake of Notre Dame. SpeakersIngval Maxwell, OBE DADun FRIBA(Retd) FRIAS(Retd) FSAScot Qualifying in 1969, Ingval Maxwell spent his 40-year professional career dealing with the conservation of ancient monuments and historic buildings. Whilst also acting as Architectural Adviser to the Scottish Ancient Monuments Board and Historic Buildings Council he retired in 2008 from his 15-year position as Historic Scotland’s Director, Technical Conservation, Research and Education. Appointed an Officer of the British Empire in 2003, in 2018 he was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. After 10 years he retired in 2022 as Chair of the Council on Training in Architectural Conservation. He is currently an Honorary Member of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Stone; the Association for Studies in the Conservation of Historic Buildings and a Member of the RIBA’s Conservation Accreditation Steering Group. Michela Pace Architect and PhD in urban planning and design at Iuav University, Venice, Michela was a researcher at the University of East London (2011-2015) and Tongji University, Shanghai (2017). Since 2008 she has been researching and teaching as part of the Iuav CityLab Cluster. The research group deals with the processes of transformation and transition of the territory and the contemporary city. Her research benefits from experiences in different countries (Italy, UK, China, Brazil) and across different themes. She studies the role of heritage within urban regeneration and territorial preservation projects, focusing on the dynamics of the real estate market and its spatial outcomes, examining the problems of financialization, privatisation and gentrification posed by the rapid growth of global cities and the neoliberal economic model, observing the close relationship between housing representation and spatial production. Alan Chandler Co-Director of the Sustainability Research Institute (University of East London) and a Director of conservation-based practice Arts Lettres Techniques. The politics of built heritage underpins the supervision of many doctoral students and has been published by Routledge – ‘The Production of Heritage’ with Michela Pace. His professional career as a Specialist Conservation Architect and Co-Chair of the RIBA Conservation Steering Group fully informs both teaching and research, with practice projects on National monuments such as the Grade 1 listed St Pancras Church and the Palacio Pereira in Santiago de Chile with Cecilia Puga. Alan Chandler has previously taught at the Architectural Association, Goldsmith’s College of Art, Cambridge University and Edinburgh University. Charles Bain-Smith The National Trust:—Senior Building Conservation Manager, RIBA SCA Charles is a Chartered Conservation Architect by profession and is an RIBA Accredited Specialist Conservation Architect. He started his career with English Heritage, he set up a consultancy team in a conservation contractors, was one of the founding partners and Conservation Director of specialist Cyma Architects before joining NT in 2015 working out of the Scotney Hub and subsequently joined the central buildings team in 2019. He is a central source of advice on the conservation of buildings. His role is about supporting delivery of projects, developing strategies, setting policies/standards and facilitating change so that NT remains an exemplar in conservation of buildings and facilitating in projects. He also coordinates with the wider world of conservation, promoting NT in conservation circles. Paul Chatham Paul qualified as an architect in 1997 and is an RIBA accredited conservation architect. He has an RICS Postgraduate Diploma in Building Conservation and recently completed a MSc in Timber Building Conservation taught at the Weald and Downland Living Museum and validated by the University of York. He is a member of the RIBA Conservation Advisory Group and helped assemble the RIBA Professional Services Contract 2020 for Conservation Architectural services.
