Why This Watch Matters Doxa brings the funk with this grafic dress watch, executed in 18k rose gold. The Full Story The word Doxa is Greek for glory, and the brand was founded by Georges Ducommun in 1889. The company started in the Jura region of Switzerland and is still around today. Doxa is best -known for their association with diving and dive watches, like the professional divers with orange dials. However, prior to and during all of that dive watch focus, the brand also supplied customers with classically styled dress watches like the one we have here. The Grafic was released by Doxa in 1957 as a certainly Bauhaus-inspired take on a staple of the 1950s, the square dress watch. The long lines emanating from the center of the dial serve as hour markers and separate the dial into 12 distinct sections. In the fifth section or the five o'clock area, Doxa sneaks in a bit of branding reading "DOXA grafic Automatic" because signing this funky watch at 12 o'clock would be out of place. Beyond the case shape and dial printing, maybe the funkiest design detail here is the date porthole at 10:30. While it is unexpected at first glance, the date complication's placement does a nice job of balancing out the design in contrast to the signature. Oh and the case is 18k rose gold, not too shabby. We paired this Doxa with our Cooper lined watch strap in burgundy for a timeless look that could have worked in 1957 just as well as it does in 2021, playing off of the rose gold. The case is strong with some scratches and a few light scratches. It is probably polished. The back of the lugs have some scratches. The engravings are clearly visible and very crisp on the caseback. The dial has developed a very light patina throughout. The edge of the dial has a bit more patina than the rest. The hands have developed patina. The dial, case, crown, movement, and buckle and are all signed by Doxa. The crystal has a few scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
