Why This Watch Matters There is so much more than meets the eye in this Piaget, like the groundbreaking 12P movement inside. The Full Story Launched with fanfare in 1960, the 12P caliber was immediately described as a “technical revolution." With a 2.3mm thickness, it was the slimmest automatic movement ever made, and Piaget soon doubled down when it added a date complication. The 12P was developed after the unveiling of the manual-winding 9P, which was also focused on the ultra-thin side of watchmaking, reaching a thickness of just 2mm. These slender movements allowed for slim and elegant cases with intricate designs like this integrated bracelet and textured bracelet, case, and dial ref. 12455A6. While most of the excitement around watches with integrated bracelets surrounds the steel sports watches such as the Royal Oak or Nautilus, there are so many dress-oriented gems that deserve more appreciation. Like many of the timepieces from the period, this case and dial feature a fantastic bark-like texture that commands one’s attention. The case also is expanded in width towards the upper half, giving additional flamboyance for the wearer. The subtle details really make this watch special. For instance, the bold-black “Piaget” font on the dial is complemented by an incredible cursive “Automatic”. Whether on this Piaget or on examples like the Longines Conquests from the 1950s, this stylized font is always one that we appreciate seeing. Balancing the texture of the dial are the very refined hour markers.
