The 18x24x2 Aerostar comes in at 17 3/8" x 23 3/8" x 1 3/4" actual. Built for a nominal 18x24x2 return, which is a common spec on older residential furnaces and many light commercial air handlers. The 2-inch depth gives you roughly twice the debris-holding capacity of a 1-inch filter in the same nominal opening, and the lower pressure drop is easier on the blower motor across its service life. MERV 8 covers standard residential dust and pollen filtration. MERV 11 handles pet dander and most common allergens. MERV 13 captures fine particulates including smoke, bacteria, and virus-carrying droplets - the right grade if the household has someone with asthma or if wildfire smoke is a regular concern. Pleated synthetic media with an electrostatic charge does the filtration work. Manufactured in the USA by Con-Air Industries at the Orlando, Florida facility. The cardboard frame is reinforced to maintain shape under the suction generated by modern variable-speed blowers, which run at higher airflow rates than older single-stage units. Service life is 4 to 6 months for MERV 8 and 11 in typical residential conditions, 2 to 4 months for MERV 13. Heavier load conditions shorten those intervals proportionally.
