An atmospheric image of early morning Melbourne around 1925. The photographer was in Aikman Street, looking across the Yarra River towards the Flinders Street Station Clock tower,
which is located at the southern end of Elizabeth Street. All text © HotPress This photograph is by Sir Robert Gibson. Aikman Street no longer exists, but here is some detail from a map showing where the photo was taken from and the direction the photographer was looking to. Notes from the State Library tell us that this image "Looks North to Flinders Street Station, down Aikman Street, from City Road, South Melbourne. The Alexandra Mansions and the Playhouse Theatre can be seen on the left hand side of the street. " This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria. Our team of conservators have worked on a high resolution digital image in order to remove blemishes and artifacts such as stains, mould, scratches and damage caused by the handling of the original.
