Why This Watch Matters The Speedmaster may be the first vintage Omega collectors think of when they think of Omega, but this Constellation is proof there’s more to vintage Omega than Moonwatches. With a classic “pie-pan” Constellation dial, it’s a Mad Men era classic. The Full Story The Constellation was originally introduced in 1952 and quickly became a best-seller for Omega. Today, it’s commonly eclipsed by the Speedmaster and Seamaster, but we think the Constellation – especially the pie-pan dial models in all their variations – are undervalued, somewhat under-appreciated, and therefore a great opportunity. This example has the geometric pie-pan dial, with no date, which for many collectors is actually a plus (and we can understand why you might feel that way). You also get an in-house Omega movement: the chronometer grade, self-winding, 24 jewel caliber 551, adjusted to 5 positions and temperature – this is a great, classic Omega caliber and one of those movements that used to make people say, “Buy a Rolex if you want to impress your friends; buy an Omega if you want to impress your watchmaker.” This is, we think, a much more distinctive look than other more traditional dress watches as well, such as the Patek Philippe or Longines Calatravas, and is a reasonable foray into the world of vintage Omega, as well as a great find in itself. The dial is in great condition and the case also has maintained its luster. The only real possible sticking point about this watch is the bracelet – it’s original, but it clearly was loved and worn often by the previous owner and has become slightly stretched out. But fear not – HODINKEE has lots of straps for you to choose from, should you feel like it is too loose for your wrist. Additionally, the watch was recently serviced and is in good working order.
