Why This Watch Matters The subtle sheen of the case doesn’t lie: this quietly handsome Patek Philippe wristwatch from the 1950s is cased in platinum, and it’s a great example of everything that made the watchmaking of Patek so revered. The Full Story The spectacular appearance of the reference 2488 made it a hit for Patek in the 1950s. The square dial may seem plain but the thick crystal brings added depth to the dial, and the geometry of the case gives the watch additional, though still discreet, presence (the same is true of the contemporary reference 1450 “Top Hat”). At 35mm x 28mm, this isn’t an especially small watch either; the size and shape make it suitable for dress and even formal occasions (there are differing views on wearing a watch with a dinner jacket, but if you’re going to wear one it would be hard to beat this Patek). Inside is a mechanical masterpiece: the Patek Philippe calibre reference 10’200. If we could pick a single, simple wristwatch movement of the 20th century that represents the Genevan watch movement design and finishing philosophy at its height, it would probably be this one. This is a full-bridge, hand-wound movement of absolutely top quality; the steelwork is superb, the layout extremely visually pleasing, and both mechanically and aesthetically its not only irreproachable, but also exemplary. A 1950s-era Patek Philippe with the richly luxurious but unostentatious exterior and mechanically flawless interior that make the simple watchmaking of Pateks of this era a true gold – or maybe we should say, platinum – standard. As with many vintage Pateks, it was very carefully worn and well cared for. The dial does not have any flaws, and the case is immaculate (for which we have to thank not just the care of previous owners, but the durability of platinum as well). The striking crystal is also intact and the movement is working well (though service history is unknown). The case is in overall good condition with the exception of a light scratch to the case back; the crown is unsigned. Additionally, there is a visible hallmark to the side of the watch.
