Why This Watch Matters This Breitling Navitimer Reference 806 is special with an attractive early all-black dial. The Full Story The Navitimer is considered to be one of the most iconic vintage pilot watches, and continues to be popular among collectors today. While the exact beginning of production for this model has long been a topic of discussion among scholars and collectors alike, the general consensus is that it most likely started around 1954. The model was developed in collaboration with the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). The first Navitimers were fitted with an all-black dial and Valjoux 72 chronograph movement for a very short period. The following iteration carried over the all-black dial but was fitted with the Venus 178 chronograph movement instead. This example is unusual in that it has a Breitling signature on top of the AOPA wing logo. It has an “806” engraving on the back, with the nice beaded bezel that was prominently used in earlier Navitimer models. The case number appears to have been erroneously engraved starting with the number “8,” but in fact it was supposed to read as number “9.” This was a well-known case stamping issue from the batch produced in 1960, and the presumed correct case number of this piece, “925154,” has been confirmed by Breitling's Patrimoine Department. The case is well preserved, with the bevel on the lugs still visible in addition to the crisp caseback engravings. The beaded bezel is also in very good condition as well. The pushers and crown appear to be original. The dial shows a beautiful overall patina. The lume on the numerals and hands has darkened to an even dark olive color. The external track shows some aging, with the bottom half slightly darker in tone. The watch is in running condition with the chronograph starting, stopping, and resetting correctly at this time.
