Why This Watch Matters A quintessential 1960s racing chronograph with a beautiful panda dial. The Full Story In the 1960s, chronographs were some of the most popular watch styles thanks to the prevalence and prestige of the sport of racing. Of all the many racing chronograph styles, none are quite as iconic as the panda dial, featuring a two-register layout with a creamy silvery-white base and contrasting black, engine turned subdials arranged horizontally where the one at three o'clock features a 30-minute chronograph counter and the one at nine o'clock counts the running seconds. These sport watches had a cool elegance and classic styling, like the example from Hamilton we have here. These Hamilton chronographs were actually made by Heuer and branded Hamilton on the dial, cases, and movements. Heuer was known for making watches for other brands and even retailers, often having other names on them. These Hamilton chronographs, similar to the popular Heuer Carrera design at the time, attracted many new and young buyers due to the more approachable price point compared to a Carrera. This ref. 7723 showcases a classic sized 36mm build and stainless steel construction with screwdown caseback. Despite the chronograph functionality, its design is rather minimalistic with a clean, easy-to-read layout. It features applied stainless steel hour markers and matchstick-style hour and minute hands, each filled with tritium lume for optimal readability. In addition, the outer track is marked with a tachymeter scale. Yet, the timelessness and simplicity of the ref. 7723 doesn't come at the expense of attention to detail. Take, for instance, the Hamilton logo on the dial with its highly legible sans-serif font and stylized "H." Inside, you'll find the manual winding Valjoux 7330. Altogether, this watch offers an incredible value for a Swiss-made chronograph with a panda dial. The case is strong with scratches and the caseback engravings are clearly visible. The caseback has a couple deeper scratches, most likely from opening it up. The feet of the lugs are still visible. The numbers between both sets of lugs are clearly visible. The dial is in good condition with light patina and a few light scratches. The edge of the dial has some wear. The hands and hour markers have developed patina. The lume on the hands and on the dial have aged to the same attravie yellow color. The crown is unsigned which is correct for this model. The crystal has light scratches. The movement has some watchmakers marks hand-engraved. The dial, case, and movement are signed by Hamilton. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
