Why This Watch Matters This Vulcain chronograph has a cool 1960s vibe thanks to its angular, tonneau-shaped case and understated "ghost" grey dial. It also has a bright orange lollipop chronograph seconds hand that adds a pop of color. The Full Story You may be familiar with Vulcain from its Cricket alarm watches as well as its association with various former American presidents like Harry S. Truman and Dwight Eisenhower. While we do love the Cricket, this chronograph model represents a whole different dimension of Vulcain's historical offerings. The angular, tonneau-shaped steel case and pump pushers are reminiscent of the Zenith A384, A385, A3817, and A3818 models, which were introduced during the same period with cases made by Spillmann (a company that is also known for producing the cases of vintage Rolex Daytonas). The trapezoidal effect of the case has a nice height and presence on the wrist without adding too much heft on the sides, allowing for a comfortable fit on the wrist. The dial is very understated, with a textured, light grey dial with a tachymeter scale that contrasts beautifully with the chunky black indexes and luminous hands. The subtle "T" indication right above the six is a similar designation used for the Tritium dials of some Heuer dials, such as for the classic Carrera ref. 2447. The cherry on top of this watch is the neon orange chronograph hand with a round tip that adds a pop of color and maximizes visibility. On the caseback, it has a cool engraved ship logo, referencing the watch's water resistance rating. This Vulcain is a traditional chronograph in that it has a pusher at two o’clock that starts the chronograph function, BUT the stop and reset functions are both controlled by the bottom pusher at four o’clock. The case is strong with some scratches. The bevels of the case are all present. The sunburst finish on the top of the case is present as well, although the case may have been lightly polished. The text on the caseback, including the case number and reference, is present and visible. The dial and hands are in good condition. The hands have developed patina. The lume on the hands and dial are very close in color. The crystal has light scratches.
