Why This Watch Matters This is a rare glimpse of a bathyscaphe model by Waltham with a stunning gunmetal grey dial. The Full Story When you first see this watch, you might do a double take. Considering the nearly identical design to Blancpain’s Bathyscaphe, this creation is likely the result of a partnership between Blancpain and Waltham after the original Waltham ceased manufacturing in the US after 1954. The gunmetal grey dial with a sunburst pattern adds to the beauty of this piece; depending on the direction of the light and angle, it brings out the different shades of metallic grey. The lume shows adequate patina and wear, which bring a sense of grit to the piece. Furthermore, the black bakelite bezel, which was preserved in excellent condition, really brings this watch together. The red date is a nice accent to the overall monochromatic look. The case size of 37mm and nicely beveled, curved lugs exude a certain level of elegance for a tool watch when combined together. Plus, this example comes with a vintage Waltham fitted box with a hang tag and instruction booklet. The case shows some light wear with scratches with light polish. The backside of the lugs shows some noticeable scratches where the spring bars meet. The caseback is engraved with the name “Richard D. Moss.” The black acrylic bezel shows faint surface scratches but there is no noticeable damage underneath. The crown may be a replacement part. The dial retains a nice semi-metallic gunmetal grey in a sunburst pattern with minor scratches especially around three and nine o’clock. There is some spotting around the perimeter of the dial on the inner rim, and some wear around the gold-colored index surrounds. The lume plots have patinated to a fairly dark cream color and show some level of wear. The hands show some wear, especially on the hour and minute hands. The movement is in running condition at this time.
