The model was officially named as the “Turn-O-Graph.” The reference 1625, the second generation Turn-O-Graph, was produced from circa 1959 to 1977 in solid 18k gold, two-tone steel and yellow gold, and in steel with a white-gold bezel. The moniker “Thunderbird” derived from the nickname of the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, established in 1953 which was the first supersonic aerobatic team. It started with one pilot wearing this watch, and eventually it became the team’s go-to watch. For Rolex, it was perfect for capturing the American market with this patriotic reference. The case has most likely been lightly polished in the past. Also, the lugs show some thinning as well. The Thunderbird bezel shows some light wear and scratches. The dial shows a nice light patina across the board and the lume plots are fully intact as well. There is some discoloration around the outer edges of the dial which is only visible at an angle. While the lume on the handset has aged slightly, the handset is a later service replacement. The movement is in running condition with the date advancing correctly at this time.
