Why This Watch Matters A Pre-Moon with patina is what any Speedy fan wants, and that’s exactly what you get with this early reference 145.022. The Full Story The reference 145.022 was the very first Speedmaster to use the caliber 861, which replaced the revered caliber 321 from the very first models. This was just about the only significant change made to the faithful Speedy, as you have the same 42 mm case with lyre lugs of the previous reference 145.012 and attractive stepped dial. Additionally, it should be noted that from 1969 onwards the logo was painted rather than applied, and the example you see here (from 1969) reflects that. Additionally, this Speedy still comes with a Pre-Moon case back, before the moniker, “The first watch worn on the moon,” was engraved on it. This early version comes with the patina we love on the handset and the indexes. The engravings on the case back are still deep and legible, and the logo’s shape on the crown is from the correct period. The handset comes with a slightly darker patina than the indexes, which look killer on the stepped dial with painted Omega logo. Lastly, the chronograph caliber 861 movement performs flawlessly. The bezel on this example doesn't feature the accent on "tachymetre" and the marker dot is next to 0 of 70, this is characteristic of a "Narrow C" bezel launched in 1970 (according to Moonwatch Only by G. Rossier & A. Marquié).
