Why This Watch Matters Here, we have the seldom-seen Rolex "Red" Submariner with a Mark 1, meters-first dial. This exact watch was featured in HODINKEE's Reference Points entry on the Rolex Submariner. The Full Story Rolex introduced the Submariner ref. 1680 in the late 1960s, and it was the first Submariner to include a date function. The watch's defining characteristic is a single line of red text at six o'clock stating the Submariner name. Rolex produced the "Red" version of the Submariner until around the 4.0 million serial range (in the mid-1970s), with later models featuring white text. The present example has a "meters-first" dial that falls into the Mark 1 category. Mark 1s are exceedingly rare – only the first three variations of the ref. 1680 featured dials where the depth rating started with meters. After this, Rolex would switch to "feet first" dials. The characteristics of a Mark 1 dial include the meters-first depth rating, closed sixes on the depth rating, a compact dial font with a long curved "f" (in ft), and Rolex printed red "SUBMARINER" lettering over white on the dial. You can see all of these unique details under a loupe. In addition, this watch falls into the correct serial-number range for a Mark 1 dial, with its 2.1 million case number. The watch we have here is in overall excellent and original condition. The case number dates to 1969, and the inside caseback is stamped with "II 69," which indicates the case was likely produced in the second quarter of 1969. In addition, the original C&I bracelet is stamped "1 70." Given these markings, it's likely that this watch was assembled in 1969 and was sold in 1970 in the United States. The watch has also retained its correct non-Triplock crown (sans the three dots) and has a nicely preserved bezel insert. All in all, this particular example has been well-cared for over the years and has aged beautifully. The lume has turned to a gorgeous dark yellow, almost-orange hue, and the red Submariner text is still vibrant. These Mark 1 Red Submariners do not come up for sale very often, especially in this kind of condition. The Mark I has the little subtle differences that get collectors excited, and which make this a truly desirable and exceptional watch. The case is strong with light scratches. The case has likely been lightly polished, but the bevels and feet are still visible on the lugs. The dial is overall clean with light patina. The lume on the dial and hands have developed patina and aged to a beautiful yellow-orange color. The hands have developed some oxidation. The original bezel insert is in great condition with light wear and has remained black. The pip at 12 o'clock on the bezel has developed patina and darkened. The original C&I rivet bracelet is in overall good condition with some scratches and light stretch. The back of the end-links have some scratches and marks. The clasp is marked "I-70," indicating it's from January 1970. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
