The Full Story This chronograph was made by Breitling for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in the 1960s. This model was offered for a short period, from about 1964 to 1966. It was a part of the Premier line, but it does not feature any Premier branding on the dial. There is also no mention of Breitling or any other type of designation on the dial, giving it a stealthy, almost mil-spec aesthetic. This watch is powered by the Venus 178, the same movement that appeared in many Navitimers of the same period, but it featured a much less complicated dial and no slide-rule bezel. This watch was meant for leisure pilots because of its legible dial and chronograph function. This example has “WOG” stamped on the movement, meaning it was made for the U.S. market. The dials on these AOPA chronographs are relatively simple compared to the Navitimers of the same era. The dial features luminous Arabic numerals for the hour markers, a tachymeter scale on the outer edge of the dial in white text, and sunken engine turned silver sub-dials. The case is strong with some scratches. The stepped bezel is clearly visible with sharp edges. The beveled edges on all the lugs are clearly visible. The back of the lugs have some scratches. The caseback has a few scratches and shows signs of being opened. The dial has developed a light patina. The hour and minute hands are in the correct style, but the white paint appears to have been removed, or they might be service replacements.
