Why This Watch Matters The orange hands are pretty irresistible, and the automatic caliber and excellent dial legibility prove very practical for daily wear. The Full Story Breitling was part of Project 99, which eventually resulted in one of the first chronograph calibers ever made, the caliber 11, released in 1969. One of the other partners was Heuer, who initially owned the Chronomatic trademark but grew uncertain about its branding possibility, and ultimately relinquished the rights to Breitling. With such an impressive movement, the Chrono-Matic is a very rounded chronograph that offers the outstanding legibility that made Breitling’s reputation. In that regard, the contrasting sub-registers and rotating bezel displaying both hours and minutes are both among the best in class, while the date placement at 6 o’clock is remarkably well executed. And the dashing orange handset reminds us that this watch could not belong to any other decade than the 1970s. The black dial does not show any flaws, although the applied indexes show a bit of aging. The black rotating bezel does not come with any of the usual deep scratches, which allows for an easy reading of its hour and minute tracks. Finally, the reference engravings and serial numbers are still deep on the caseback, indicating that the case was unpolished, especially in conjunction with the sharp lugs on this example. Note that the winding crown on the left side is correctly signed with the Breitling logo. This is a funky but practical vintage Breitling chronograph.
