The Full Story The reference 1680 Submariner was introduced in 1966. While the exact dates have not been confirmed, based on the examples that have surfaced, the “Submariner” logo in red was produced from around 1969 through 1974. This example has a "Mark V" dial that is black matte, plus a subdued red color for the “Submariner” signature, and a feet/meter designation with a nearly closed number “6.” The overall appearance showcases why so many collectors cannot get enough of vintage Submariners. The gently faded nature of this piece exemplifies that vintage look that cannot be satisfied with a perfect-looking new piece. The dial has aged nicely; this is exceptionally highlighted by the matching dark creamy color of the lume plots and the hands, which have reached a nearly honey-gold brown color. The bezel shows some some scratches and has faded in color to a blue-grey hue. The pearl on the bezel is a later replacement. The dial has also lightly faded and shows uniformity with the color on the bezel. The luminous material has patinated into a deep cream color evenly throughout the dial and hands. Under the UV light, there are some faint marks around the indexes and around the center post, possibly due to the deterioration of the lume over time. The movement is in running condition at this time. Based on the bracelet and end piece numbers, we presume that the bracelet is a later version. The bracelet shows some stretch between the links.
