Why This Watch Matters Gotta love that 'Frog's Foot' coronet! The Full Story Rolex debuted the Explorer II ref. 1655 in 1971, and it was aimed towards polar surveyors, spelunkers, and adventurers. One of the defining features of this reference is the neon-orange 24-hour hand. This hand was specifically designed to help the wearer distinguish between night and day when they were in an environment where they couldn’t tell the difference, for instance underground or in a cave. The Explorer II, reference 1655 went through multiple designs throughout its lifespan until Rolex stopped production of the model in 1984. This particular example features the Mark II dial, notable for the ‘Frog Foot’ coronet as well as the correct 5.5 million serial number range. Collectors have nicknamed this specific Rolex coronet “Frog's Foot” due to the layout of the spikes on the crown, which are reminiscent of the amphibian's foot. Collectors have also nicknamed the reference 1655 the Freccione or “The Arrow” in Italian because of the orange hand. As a result of this narrow focus, the Explorer II was not a best-seller initially. However, as Rolex sport models became more collectible and with its undeniable 1970s appeal, the Explorer II has gradually become more desired. Today, the 1655 has become more sought after than ever by collectors, but when compared to other models like a Daytona or Submariner, they offer a great value. The case is strong with scratches and appears to have been lightly polished. The dial and hands are in great condition with light patina. The lume on the dial and on the hands has all aged to the same color. The orange 24-hour hand has a couple slight cracks in the lume, and the minute hand has a slight crack in the paint towards the tip of the hand. The bezel is in overall excellent condition and has some light scratches; the finish is still visible and paint in the numbers. The bracelet clasp is marked "P4" indicating it is from 1991 and is a later Rolex replacement. The original would have also been a solid link Oyster, like the one currently on it.
