Why This Watch Matters This Rolex Submariner in 18k gold is the epitome of luxury. One might be hesitant to try an all-gold Rolex, but once it’s on the wrist, you will not want to take it off. The Full Story The Submariner model has reigned supreme for decades, and the reference 16808 brings the watch to another level of luxury. The reference 16800 (which is a stainless steel version) was produced from the late 1970s to mid 1980s and is considered the transitional model between the first Submariner model 1680 into the more modern creations. The model was upgraded with the higher depth indication 1000ft/600m, from a plexi crystal to a sapphire crystal, and an upgraded movement with a quick-set function which was a relief to many. This gold version follows the same upgrade as the steel version, but it has the best of the vintage/modern combination with the much sought after “nipple” dial, which was seen on the gold version of its earlier iteration reference 1680/8. The case and the bracelet may have been lightly polished, but the case retains a strong from. The dial is overall well preserved with a very slight scratch to the right on the inverted triangle index at 12. The gold-tone letters to the left side of the first two lines have darkened slightly. The lume has patinated into a soft cream color evenly throughout the dial and hands. Based on the even wear, the handset appear to be original to the watch. The movement is in running condition at this time. The bracelet shows some light scratches, some more noticeable on the center links due to the stretch between the links.
