Why This Watch Matters This GMT is a true transitional reference. Its case takes influence from its predecessor, the reference 1675, but this watch features a glossy black dial with the white-gold surrounding indexes that would later become the norm in the world "modern" Rolex. Also, just look at that patina. It doesn’t get much better than this one. The Full Story At first, the 16750 was imperceptibly better than the former GMT-Master, the reference 1675. Most of the improvements came from the new movement (the caliber 3075) that allowed for a quick-set date, which was a welcome addition. Then in 1983 the modern glossy dial was introduced to the reference 16750, bearing indexes with white-gold surrounds that replaced the original painted ones on matte dials. The one characteristic that remained the same was the plexiglass crystal, which offers a totally different light exposure than the colder sapphire crystal that would follow on the later reference 16700. As expected, this plexiglass crystal gives a unique shine to the dial and underlines the beautiful patina on the hands and indexes. For that very reason, the transitional 16750 can be considered one of the last great vintage Rolex ever produced. The case has been polished before, but the lugs are still fat. It comes with a later, and very tight, Oyster bracelet, and it seems very likely that the date disc and the bezel were replaced at some point, yet those newer parts underline the striking look of this transitional 16750.
