Why This Watch Matters It's simple. You can't go wrong with a classic Rolex Submariner with date. The Full Story Rolex introduced the Submariner ref. 16800 in 1979, and it was in production until 1988. This was the second variation of the Submariner to have a date function. Rolex offered this reference in stainless steel, gold, and, for the first time, in a two-tone combination of steel and gold (ref. 16803). Rolex upgraded this reference with a faster beating movement, a quick-set date, and a sapphire crystal compared to the previous ref. 1680. These factors also helped give the watch an increase in water resistance from 200m to 300m. Rolex still rates the Submariner to 300 meters, and it all started with ref. 16800. Some of the earlier 16800s have matte dials and lume plots without white gold surrounding them, giving them a more vintage aesthetic like ref. 1680, but many have glossy dials and white gold surrounding the hour markers, just like the example we have here today. This watch dates to 1987, and it falls in the range of serial numbers before Rolex began putting letters in front of the case number to indicate birth year. The case is strong with scratches and some nicks along the edges of both sides. The bevels on the lugs are visible. The caseback has some scratches and shows signs of being opened. The interior of both sets of lugs have light scratches, showing signs of the original bracelet. The dial and hands are original and in good condition. The lume on the hands and on the dial have turned to a chalky white color and have developed light patina. The lume at 12 o'clock has developed a couple darker spots. The bezel is in good condition with some scratches and the pip has aged to a darker color. The inside of the caseback is stamped, "16800." This watch just returned from a complete movement service, where the crown, crown tube, and gaskets were all replaced with brand new, factory service Rolex parts.
