The Full Story When it comes to military watches, Wittnauer is one of the names that comes up the most. The company supplied watches and navigation instruments to the U.S. Military during World War I and World War II. Staying true to the company's military design background, this 1960s field watch is clearly focused on function and legibility above all else. First off, as is often stipulated in military watch specs, this watch has a black dial that allows for greater contrast against the rest of the watch, improving visibility and minimizing any glare or reflection. We must also highlight the two-tone effect of the dial: The central portion has a matte dark grey finish, while the slightly sloping outer track has a glossy black finish, adding extra dimension to the dial. The domed crystal adds another layer of depth and character to the watch. The white numerals and hands are kept very simple for superb legibility. The lume plots and the lume on the hands bring just the right amount of attention to the watch, with a consistent warm beige patina. The movement inside reveals part of Wittnauer's interesting history. It is fitted with the Wittnauer caliber 11KAS, which was the equivalent to the Longines caliber 501, with the exception of the rotor design. Wittnauer served as a U.S. importing agent for Longines starting in the late 1800s to the 1960s, forming the U.S.-based "Longines-Wittnauer Company" in 1936. The lightly polished case shows some scratches throughout, which are more noticeable on the caseback. There are some scratches on the crystal but they do not affect the legibility of the dial. There are drilled holes on the sides of the lugs. The crown is signed. The dial has an attractive two-tone black finish. The central portion is slightly lighter in color with a matte dark grey shade, while the outer track has a very glossy black finish. Though wear and loss are present, the lume plots have aged to a uniform soft creamy beige. The lume on the hands has aged to a slightly darker hue compared to the lume plots. The "T-Swiss-T" signature printed at six o'clock on the outer edge of the dial notes the use of tritium and is visible when peering at the bottom of the dial at an angle.
