Kugae Equal End Gundog Training Dummy – 12oz
Kugae Pro Equal End Gundog Training Dummy – 12oz The Kugae Pro Equal End Gundog Training Dummy – 12oz has been designed for dogs that are progressing through their retrieve trainin g and developing towards more realistic gundog work. At approximately 340g (12oz), it provides a more substantial and realistic retrieve than our lightweight 2oz dummy, helping dogs become accustomed to carrying additional weight as their confidence, ability and strength develop. At around the weight of a partridge, the 12oz dummy is an ideal progression for dogs moving beyond their early retrieving exercises. Combined with our equal-ended, toggle-free design, it encourages a centred pickup, balanced carry and clean delivery while preparing the dog for the demands of more advanced training. Made from durable canvas and available in Plum, Blue, Green and Orange, it is a practical training dummy designed around the way we actually train our dogs here at Kugae Gundogs. Progress from Lightweight to More Realistic Retrieves We believe in progressing a dog's training gradually rather than asking too much too soon. For puppies and dogs at the beginning of their retrieving journey, we recommend starting with our 2oz Equal End Lightweight Dummy. This gives the dog something extremely light and comfortable to pick up while they develop confidence and good retrieving habits. As the dog's ability and strength develop, you can then introduce the 12oz Equal End Dummy. The additional weight gives the dog a more realistic retrieve and begins preparing them for carrying heavier items confidently in the field. It's about building the dog up progressively – starting light, establishing the correct habits and then increasing the challenge when the dog is ready. A More Realistic 12oz Training Weight At approximately 12oz, this dummy is around the weight of a partridge, making it a useful step towards the type of retrieves a working gundog may eventually encounter. The additional weight encourages the dog to become stronger and more confident when carrying, helping to develop the muscles used when retrieving and carrying game. Rather than simply retrieving across a flat training field, the 12oz dummy can be incorporated into more realistic exercises involving woodland, cover, obstacles, jumps and varied terrain. Our approach is simple: wherever possible, train the dog in the type of environment you eventually expect it to work in. The 12oz Equal End Dummy gives you another way of gradually preparing your dog for those more demanding situations. Designed to Encourage Better Retrieves One of the biggest differences between our Equal End Dummy and many conventional gundog dummies is the absence of a throwing toggle. Dogs can quickly learn to grab a traditional dummy by the toggle and swing it around on the return. Once established, this can become an unwanted habit that then has to be corrected. The Kugae Equal End Dummy removes that temptation. Its evenly balanced shape encourages the dog to pick the dummy up centrally in the mouth, helping develop a comfortable, balanced hold and a cleaner return to the handler. Once a dog has learnt to pick up and carry a dummy correctly, you have a much better foundation from which to progress onto other types of dummies and eventually real game. Why Carl and the Kugae Team Use Equal End Dummies Over the years, Carl has trained thousands of dogs and one thing has become very clear – every dog is different. Some dogs naturally retrieve and deliver straight to hand. Others like to swing the dummy around on the throwing cord, play with it on the return, or struggle with the way a traditional dummy sits in their mouth. Rather than forcing every dog into the same system, Carl likes to keep an open mind and find practical solutions that help the dog understand what is being asked. The Equal End Dummy has proven to be a valuable training aid for many dogs because of its balanced design. By distributing the weight evenly throughout the dummy, it naturally encourages a better hold, a more comfortable carry and often a smoother delivery. The toggle-free design also removes the temptation for dogs to grab the throwing cord and use it as a toy, helping to reduce one of the common bad habits seen during retrieve training. While no dummy replaces good training, using the right equipment can make the learning process easier for both dog and handler. Build Strength and Carrying Confidence As a dog progresses in its training, retrieving isn't simply about finding something and bringing it back. A working dog needs to be comfortable carrying weight while negotiating the type of terrain it may encounter in the field. The 12oz dummy allows you to gradually introduce that additional weight while working on retrieves through cover, woodland, over obstacles and across varied ground. This helps develop the dog's carrying strength and confidence while maintaining the correct hold and delivery you've established during earlier training. Four Colours for Different Training Conditions Available in: Plum Blue Green Orange Having four colours gives you greater flexibility when training in different light conditions, backgrounds and environments. Visibility can change depending on the time of day, surrounding cover and the ground you're working over. Being able to select different colours allows you to adjust your training and give the dog the appropriate level of challenge for its experience. For a dog progressing in its training, you can vary colours, distances and locations to make retrieves progressively more challenging rather than simply repeating the same exercise. As Carl says, in dog training we want to put as much percentage on our side as possible to achieve the confident pickup, carry and delivery we're looking for. Mix 2oz and 12oz Dummies As your dog becomes more experienced, the two weights can be used together during the same training session. You might place some 2oz dummies and some 12oz dummies so the dog learns that not every retrieve will feel exactly the same. This variation helps prevent the dog becoming accustomed to retrieving only one particular weight and adds another useful element to more advanced training. It also allows you to tailor each session to the individual dog – something that is central to the way we train at Kugae.
