While John Cumming began illicitly distilling in 1811, his wife Helen officially secured a license in 1824, making Cardhu the first legal distillery pioneered by a woman. Elizabeth Cumming, John's daughter-in-law, took over in 1872, further refining the whisky's character and establishing its iconic reputation. Cardhu draws its water from the Mannoch Hills, softened by peat, which contributes to the smooth and mellow character of its whisky.
