Hoolihan 323: "'By general consent,' Bill informs us, 'Minnesota has enjoyed a superior reputation for climate, soil, and scenery beyond that of any other state in the Union, with, perhaps, a single exception [i.e., Florida]'. Bill gives particular attention to Minnesota's reputation as a resort for consumptives. He attributes the salubrious effect of the state's climate on those suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis to 'dry continental winds from the interior,' which combined with Minnesota's high altitude, provide 'an equable and a relatively dry atmosphere' that has a 'bracing, tonic effect on the whole man, affording opportunity for unrestrained exercise in the open air, causing good digestion to wait on appetite, and with these the advent of fresh wholesome blood, which is the physician to heal the diseased portions of the lungs, and restore healthful action to the inflamed parts'."
