2017 JIMMY WATSON TROPHY WINNER Inspired by the savoury Grenache of the Old World – darker, tannic, herbaceous & spicy, this lascivious little wonder shows off its suitability for the climate in which it is grown. A return to the vintage of old with vintage beginning somewhat later than recent years. High spring rainfall and consistent temperatures throughout the growing season saw higher yields coupled with excellent flavour intensity. Overall, another exceptional year. The wine was fermented with 15% whole bunch with half the remaining stems also included in the ferment. Maturation took place in a combination of neutral oak Foudre and 20% second-use Burgundian barrels for 12 months. Brick red, leading to garnet in colour, this Grenache is bursting full of complex secondary and tertiary characters. The nose starts with jammy plum and leather with other noticeable hints of dried fig, tobacco, and gamey meatiness. A delicate plushness is met on the palate, with soft velvety tannins and long a warm savoury finish melding beautifully with the earthy, dried herb, dark chocolate and sweet baking spice flavours. Enjoy this piece of history now.
