Credited as the first person to circumnavigate the world 500 years ago, the Portuguese navigator planned and led the 1519 Spanish expedition which sailed around South America and across the Pacific. Although Magellan was killed in a conflict in the Phillipines, one of his ships completed the trip around the globe, returning to Spain in 1521.
