Thierry Garnaud, former Maître de Chai at Cheval Blanc for 38 vintages, wanted to try his hand at something different. A pure expression of a unique terroir, more modern, without oak, and available as an everyday drinker without breaking the bank. '8a' is the identity in our chai of the cuve in which this wine is lovingly crafted. Made from specific parcels of slightly younger vines on our clay-limestone soils rich in iron deposits, it's vinified and matured solely in concrete, and can be enjoyed sooner than its Grand Vin sibling. Not a second wine, but very much a different cuvée. The 2023 growing season on the Néac plateau combined a warm, generous summer with cooler periods that preserved the freshness and balance we always look for. Careful vineyard work and precise harvesting allowed us to capture both ripeness and vibrancy the result is a wine that is expressive, refined, and with excellent drinkability from the outset. Vinification and ageing in concrete vats, with assemblage into our single Cuve 8a. The 2023 is 95% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Pressac, fresh, linear and energetic, with red berries, a hint of mint, and the chalky mineral signature of our terroir. Drink now and through 2034.
