FC-1 has the unique distinction of being the one and only Burroughs book to have a frontispiece in full color. This was the first of the Tarzan titles to be illustrated by John Coleman Burroughs, the author's younger son. By contrast, the 1948 reprint has a very crude frontispiece, a different one, utilizing the jacket picture but with large uneven blank spaces gaping where the original title-and-author lettering was deleted.'
