Gemstones, a group whose membership is star studded (by Canadian punk/indie standards at least) including Cody Googoo (Booji Boys, Alienation, Science Project, Fragment) on bass, Chris Thomson (Eric's Trip, Moonsocket) on drums and KC Spidle (Dog Day, Bad Vibrations) as chief singer/songwriter. mixed by Luke Mumford (Mark Vodka Group), this 4 track EP is a testament to immediacy in the rock/pop arena. Write some songs, lay them out hastily and don't hold back any gusto. It's a recipe that is seldom presented uncut to the world, but can yield explosive results and while the group has other recordings with higher fidelity out there surfacing on cassette, I believe this is their most potent batch of material to date. If you like PNW melodic punkers and Nova Scotian loner poppers, the restless energy of GBV and the heart on sleeve demeanor of Husker Du, Novel of Nothing is a crucial inch of air in the ever narrowing geographical chasm between these worlds.
