An old-fashioned favourite, Hydrangea macrophylla, or Bigleaf Hydrangea, is the very picture of a romantic cottage garden. With its lush foliage and generous, oversized flower head s, it brings softness and charm to garden beds, borders and shaded corners. Flowering through summer and into autumn, the blooms range from deep purple and rich blue to soft pink, red and pure white. One of its most fascinating traits is its ability to change colour depending on soil pH. In acidic soils, flowers turn beautiful shades of blue, while alkaline soils produce pink to red tones. White varieties, however, remain white regardless of soil conditions. Hydrangea macrophylla is durable and relatively carefree, rewarding gardeners year after year with masses of spectacular blooms.
