256 pp. "In 1988, John Bockstoce, Arctic historian and archaeologist, became the first person to traverse the Northwest Passage west to east in a small boat. Arctic Passages is the extraordinary story of his voyage thirty-five hundred miles through this hemisphere's least explored and most dangerous waterway, from Bering Strait to Baffin Bay. Navigating largely without the benefit of a working compass, John Bockstoce made his way through thousands of uncharted islands along a shifting, featureless coastline, using the critical skills he had learned from years of working with Eskimo whalers."
