It inspired a play and two silent films (1912 a nd 1920 - the latter was called Deep Waters). The author was also an award-winning painter, and an engineer, most notable in the latter capacity for building the foundation for the Statue of Liberty. Smith wrote the novel based on personal experiences building a lighthouse in Fishers Island, New York called Race Rock Light. Show more
