On offer is an interesting, modest group of original, manuscript and typed correspondence to or by the famed early 20th Century opera singer and recitalist, Dorothea Dix Lawrence. While she was a successful opera singer, Lawrence is perhaps best known today as the creator of the Folklore Music Map of the United States, a colorful 1946 pictorial map showing the origins of various songs and styles across the USA. All told there are 47 pieces of correspondence, dated from the 1890s to the 1950s. Most are letters written to Dorothea, including several written by a Morgan Lawrence, presumably a sibling; a few more are written by friends or acquaintances; a large group are on business letterhead from the Encyclopaedia Britannica for whom she wrote an article on "Christmas Cards" and Hagstrom Publishing, the publishers of her map. Also included are some carbons of a strident and angry letter she wrote to a critic who criticized her map and questioned her knowledge of the origins of various tunes.
