Victor Hugo was a prominent French writer during the Romantic movement. Hugo is well known for both his poetry and classic novels such as Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Hugo's writings served as excellent critiques of French political and social issues during his time. Toilers of the Sea is a book that Hugo dedicated to the island of Guernsey where he spent fifteen years in exile.
