At Okinawa, the 22nd Marines spearheaded the division's rapid advance through northern Okinawa before being committed to the savage fighting in the south, including repeated assaults on the deadly Sugar Loaf Hill complex — where Company G was reduced from 215 to just 75 men in a single day. The regiment earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its actions on Okinawa and helped capture the capital city of Naha before the island was secured.
