It was featured prominently on the wrist of Martin Sheen's character, Captain Willard, in the seminal 1979 Francis Ford Coppola film, Apocalypse Now. The inclusion of the watch was no mistake – the Seiko 6105 dive watch was popular among U.S. service members during the Vietnam War in the early 1970s. It was favored for its rugged nature and resistance to the harsh jungle environment. As a testament to that, many examples, including this one, are still running strong today. The 6105 has always had a strong cult following, but it’s only in recent years that the wider collecting world has discovered its quirky charm. From a design standpoint, it’s easy to appreciate the asymmetrical case. Additionally, the 6105 features an interesting crown construction that locks the push-pull crown in by using a small post and grooves. On many examples this mechanism can be worn down, but it functions flawlessly on this particular watch. The 6105 is one of the most celebrated vintage tool watches out there today, not only because it played a role in the Vietnam War, but it was also popular with divers of the time. The case has scratches and a few light nicks on the sides. The caseback has a few scratches but the engravings are strong. The dial is in good condition and has developed a light patina. The hands have developed patina and the lume on the hands has darkened, a common issue with these watches. The lume on the dial has developed a little patina and aged to a pleasing cream tone. The hour markers show signs of light oxidation. The bezel is in good condition with some scratches and signs of wear. The crystal has scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/ 6.9inch wrist.
